A Director of Construction for fiber optic networks oversees the planning, execution, and management of large-scale fiber infrastructure deployments. The role ensures projects are completed on time, within budget, and to quality and safety standards by leading internal teams and managing third-party contractors. 

Job summary:
The Director of Construction provides strategic leadership and oversight for all outside plant (OSP) and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network construction initiatives. This executive-level position is responsible for the overall success of multiple concurrent construction projects, from initial design and permitting to final network turn-up. Key duties include directing field operations, managing contractor performance, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive growth through new network builds and market expansion. 

Key responsibilities:
  • Strategic leadership: Develop and implement the company's fiber construction strategies, policies, and procedures to ensure efficient and timely delivery of network infrastructure.
  • Project oversight: Lead and manage all aspects of fiber optic network construction, including aerial, underground, and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) installations.
  • Team management: Supervise, train, and mentor construction management teams and field staff, fostering a high-performance, safety-conscious culture.
  • Contractor management: Select and manage third-party construction partners and subcontractors to ensure adherence to project timelines, budget, and quality standards.
  • Financial management: Develop, forecast, and manage multi-million dollar capital expenditure budgets, controlling costs to meet or exceed financial objectives.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Partner with engineering, permitting, and operations teams to align on project plans and ensure seamless handoffs and completion.
  • Site supervision and safety: Conduct regular site visits to monitor progress, resolve issues, and ensure all work is performed in compliance with OSHA and other safety regulations.
  • Reporting and communication: Provide regular progress updates to senior leadership and other stakeholders on project status, financial performance, and key metrics.
  • Problem-solving: Proactively identify and resolve technical and logistical issues that arise during construction, such as utility coordination and field delays. 

Qualifications:
  • Experience: A minimum of 10–15 years of combined experience in OSP construction, fiber network deployment, and project management, with a proven track record of managing large-scale projects.
  • Leadership: At least 5–10 years of leadership experience, including managing teams and other managers.
  • Education: A bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Construction Management, or a related field is often required.
  • Technical knowledge: Deep understanding of fiber optic design principles, construction practices (e.g., splicing, trenching), and industry standards from organizations like the TIA and IEEE.
  • Systems and software: Proficiency with GIS mapping systems, construction management software (e.g., Microsoft Project), and standard office applications.
